Hopefully, Isla Socorro 35 miles to the south would be rewarding….. It may be difficult to see, but the volcano at Isla Socorro is STEAMING in the center of this photo…… Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico This is the Mexican Navy Base just around the southwest corner of their harbor where we had stayed our first night and fixed the propeller pitch on the starboard engine. Scott went for a dive to do it…. Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico We anchored the boat in Ensenada Grayson on the mid side of the island on the west side. We took the dinghy up to Punta Tosca (Rugged Point) where we were told we would find sharks and manta rays. Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico This was inside “Turtle Cove” at Punta Tosca. We saw several white tip reef sharks here, but none of the “big boys”….. Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico This is the western most part of Isla Socorro, Punta Tosca. On our last dive here we were rewarded with 4 manta rays and even one that let Scott go for a ride. The adventure continues….. Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico At these “corners” of islands are often where the currents are strongest and this point was right up there. The current and surge were pretty strong, so on our last day we chose to do only one dive here, but it was one of our best…. Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico Punta Tosca and our last encounter with the Giant Manta Rays of the Revillagigedos Islands…. I will hopefully soon be able to put some of our video on the website from this last experience. Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico This was the south side of Ensenda Grayson cove. Very rugged, but pretty well protected. We actually had an “out of season” tropical storm just 70 miles to the south of us and 250 miles to the west of us while we were here. No problems at the anchorage at all, though Scott had to put some “lift bags” on our anchor chain to keep it off the “bombies” (rocks) on the bottom. Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico This is Chuck and Linda on s/v “Jacaranda” anchored at Ensenada Grayson with Punta Tosca in the far left background. We also found a “secret spot” from a few friends that was right outside of this lovely cove. It came within 6 feet of the surface and had to be watched out for on approach as to not hit it….. A mother humpback and here new born baby used it as sort of a nursery. Wait till you see the video of Cindy swimming up to them and the baby whale shooting straight up into the air only 40 feet away! Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico Chuck and Linda went exploring. It was hard to keep “super snorkeler” Linda out of the water. She would go for HOURS at a time. Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico Jacaranda on a beautiful afternoon at Ensenada Grayson. Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico We took a motor up toward the NW end of the island to Cabo Henslow. Pretty, rugged and not a good time to be up there anchored out. Especially for two boats. It was pretty bumby so we turned around after our tour and headed to the SW part of the island for a more comfortable anchorage. Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico This is the promontory at Cabo Henslow. Terry Kennedy told us it was good diving. Despite the apparent calm in the photo, it was very swelly and surgy here. Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico Cabo Henslow with O’Neal Rock in the back left of the photo. Again, supposed to be a great dive site, but the weather (swell) was not cooperative. Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico This is “Roca Double” (pronounced “dohblay” just south of Cabo Henslow. You can see the waves breaking on what in some condiditons is also supposed to be good diving. Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico Close up of “Roca Double”…(dohblay)… Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico O’Neal Rock off Cabo Henslow Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico After one night’s anchoring just west of the Navy base, we bid farewell to Isla Socorro and the Revillagigedos Archepelago. This will remain one of our trip highlights and our favorite place in ALL of Mexico……Adios “Buttercup”, “Snugglebuns”, “Rosie”, “Black Beauty”, “Black Velvet”, “Arrow” and the rest of the manta gang…..We’ll miss you forever. Isla Socorro – Revillagigedos Islands, Mexico On our three 1/2 day passage (550 nautical miles) to Zihuatanejo, Scott had his “55th”…… Our longest sail yet together on “Beach House”, our first 200 mile day under sail and a few other exciting tales that you can read about in our “Ship’s Log” (diary section) of the website……Stay tuned for more adventures!
