Life and death on the open range
The KING of the Jungle
We were IN our vehicle, but only 15 feet away from this enormous male lion
His mouth is agape to cool off, much like a dog panting
One of the King’s girlfriends
Despite the ferocious look……
He was just yawning……:-)
Nice puddy tat!….:-)
Look at the size of those horns
Several hundred of these Black Rhinos are poached illegally every year in South Africa. It’s an ongoing problem and yes, corruption and big money are in play
Right as we were leaving Thornybush, only a few hundred yards from the resort… We came across this big guy
Unfortunately, Chinese Medicine believes that the horn of the Rhino is an aphrodisiac. Ridiculous of course, but these horns can fetch up to $200,000 dollars in China.
Alexandra doesn’t like standing over precipices. This one got her vertigo going.
God’s Window
Various African animal skulls in the museum

An old soul
Looking into Kruger National Park
Our only leopard siting here at Thonybush
Landrovers with tourists
It still is a bit intimidating when Mr. Elephant starts coming toward you
Not many, but they did have a few hippos here
Cape Buffalo are one of the most dangerous animals in South Africa despite being vegetarians
Thornybush is a private game reserve with joins Kruger National Park in northeastern South Africa
Not often you see a Rhino in the road
Quick drive back thorough Umfolozi/Hluhluwe Park en route to Thornybush Reserve. Hluhluwe is pronounced Schloo-shoo-ee…. Go figure!
Giraffe blend in surprisingly well in the foliage
Keep your distance
Bird of prey
Springbok abound – note the bird on his back
