COMMENT: Beach House -ANCHORED – Oponohu Bay, Moorea

    Dear Friends and Family,
We are finally on the move again! Anchored at the NE corner of Oponohu Bay for one or two nights. This is the very bay that Jimmy Buffet said he
wrote his song, \”One Particular Harbor\” about.

We motored the 16 miles here to check the engines and autopilot/steering. All seemed normal.
It was quite the washing machine ride as well which gave the steering a good test.
This is one of the most \”Bali Hai\” beautiful anchorages in the South Pacific. We\’ll be here a day or two and then head off toward
Huahine – making the 85 mile long trip a very long day sail. We\’ll leave very early. I\’ve been there before, so I\’m familiar with the entry.

COMMENT: Beach House – MOORED – Gatun Lake, Panama…

Wow! What an experience. We were the center vessel with two monohulls tied both to our port and starboard. The 55 foot Tayana \”Freewheel\” and the 46 foot Ocean \”Kristiana\” from Sydney, Australia.

We followed \”Chembulk Minnesota\”, a 600 foot bulk carrier ship.

We had three elevations to make and rose 27 feet each time. We\’re now somewhat uniquely – 75 feet above sea level!

Tomorrow, our call will be very early for the West Coast folks but may not be too early for you East Coasters.
We\’ll drop down two sets of locks tomorrow and finally return to the Pacific Ocean after 4 years.

We\’ll try an send an update as to our expected time of transiting for those who are interested in seeing us via the \”Live WebCam\” at the Miraflores locks – last one into the Pacific Ocean.

The home of the Pirates of the Caribbean. Much of the Gold and Silver that made it\’s way to Europe, passed through here.
Sir Francis Drake was buried at sea, just outside this beautiful natural harbor.

We\’ll do a bit of exploring the old Spanish Forts and check out the earthy local scene.

A delicious sail for the last 20 hours – indeed a delight. Close reaching, comfortable seas.
We had a few \”breakages\” and \”fix-it\’s\” along the way, but what else is new? After all it\’s a boat!

We\’ll need a new dinghy start battery which hopefully a motorcycle one will suffice? We\’ll write all about
\”stuff\” in the next Ship\’s Blog.

In the meanwhile, the island looks very much like a small \”Maupiti\” in the leewards of French Polynesia.
Our agent, \”Mr. Bush\” (no, not that Mr. Bush) is famous amongst the Western Caribbean cruising crowd and we\’ll get to meet
    him later today.
    Cheers,
Scott and Nikki – safe harbor – Santa Catalina Harbor, Providencia – Columbia – 275 miles North of the Panama Canal.

We are now around the edge of the funnel! The day has been pleasant and the seas calm.
We have just cleared our \”danger waypoint\” that now has us free of reefs.
We have been sailing for about 2 hours and are hopeful we\’ll be able to the last 115 miles.
