This is one of the busiest shipping coasts in the world. We were almost in constant visual contact with “Heavy Metal”
The notorious “Knysna Heads”. We arrived at the right tide and the swells were no more than 2 meters (6 1/2 feet).
Note the narrow (and also shallow) entrance to Knysna Heads on the lower right. The lagoon is in the center, the open ocean to the bottom of the map.

Knysna Marina and Shopping area.
A fun spot. Nikki introduced me to Oysters a year ago when she came to Southern California.
Made me feel right at home as we passed this boutique shop
This is a very calm day and you can see how the seas could break across the entrance. Many boats have been lost here in heavy weather. The bar can close out.
Alexandra at the heads, looking West.
From the heads, the view of Knysna Lagoon.
The heads looking East.
Looking out to sea from inside Knysna Lagoon
We’re anchored in here too!
House on the Heads – West Side
Day trip to Buffels Bay and west to Mossel Bay
We stopped for lunch in the town of Wilderness. The restaurant was very chique.
These homes were huge and many used as B&B’s
This was Alexandra’s favorite stop along the coast by car.
Expensatanium Beach House’s at Wilderness
Isn’t it nice they keep naming things after my boat?….:-)
Thesens Island, Knysna Lagoon. We had a lovely dinner here. It’s very up market and has nice shopping
Inner lagoon on the remote westside

Friend Karen in Sonoma and Cousins David and Gill (She’s from SA), watched us exit the lagoon on the live “Knysna Heads Cam”…Then they emailed me the photo! Very cool.
Karen’s photo on the live Knysna Cam – half way round the world!
Gill & David’s photo on the live Knysna Cam – Again, half way round the world. Is was 7 am for us and about 8 pm for them.
Though the sea was calm and the tide favorable, you can see mid photo how the waves could build pretty steep and fast under the “right” conditions.
Westside of Knysna Heads from seaward. Look at that view.
Very nice homes on the east side of Knysna Heads from seaward
Sailing toward Cape Agulhas which we rounded at 3 a.m. en route to Simon’s Town.
Sunset – West of Mossel Bay en route to Cape Agulhas and Simon’s Town.
