Day trip from False Bay to The Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point
It was a bit unexpected to come across Ostriches!
This “fenuncular” took people from the parking lot to the top of the hill at Cape Point
Weather station at the bottom of the African world
Looking North and East
The lighthouse was originally at the top of the peak, but due to it being obscured in fog, it was moved LOWER to it’s current location
The Southern Ocean and Atlantic Oceans generally meet here
The original lighthouse which no longer shines
Cape Point Lighthouse today
Cape Point’s official name is Cape Bartholomew. Named after the first Portuguese Navigator who rounded the “bottom” of Africa

Bird life of Cape Point
Less spectacular, but more famous – The Cape of Good Hope is only several hundred yards to the northwest of Cape Point
The Cape of Good Hope (Teasingly, the locals call it the Cape of Good Soap…:-))
Scott at Cape of Good Hope overlook
The famous Cape
Not the most southern, but the most southwestern point of the African continent. Cape Agulhas, about 70 miles to the east is the southern most point in Africa
Nikki was reminded of the smooth stones piled similarly on our visit to Pebble Beach, California in early 2012
Visitors beware. The Southern Ocean must be respected

Not only Ostriches…but Baboons live at the Capes
Always looking for a handout
Back to the Ostriches. There was lots of bird and small animal life at the Capes

Penguins Beware
You can see from this map of the bottom of the world how Penguin species have evolved and migrated to Africa, Australia and South America

You’d think these guys were rabbits watching the action on this beach….:-)

The boat was at False Bay Yacht Club in sight of the African Penguin reserve
Nice restaurant right at the reserve
