07-2011 Eastern Fiji – Savusavu, Viani Bay, Taveuni & Matangi Islands
Anja joined us from s/v “Quickstar”. This gallery is mostly of our travels from Savusavu to Viani Bay and onto Taveuni and Matangi Islands.
- Alene , the “hostess with the moistest”
06-07-2011-Eastern Fiji
Sandrine and Scott sailed to Vanua Levu and Anja joined us in Savusavu…..
- We were just through Nasonisoni Pass when these very large dolphins decided to play with us albeit briefly.
- Sandrine loves to take pictures and she got some really nice ones of these dolphins on our bow wave
- We were awaiting friends on s/v “Quickstar” to arrive from Tonga and picked up a mooring here for several days.
- The public bus system here is pretty wild. These kids were non plussed by my camera
- Sandrine enjoys shopping in the local markets and does it very well. Here she is in the Savusavu “fresh market” where we also added to our Kava collection while awaiting our permit to the rarely visited Lau Group. This has become a bit of a political football locally so we’ll press on without it and hope it arrives within the week. If not, we’ll have to skip the Lau.
- There are about 30 moorings here, often filled during the “season”. We got this view most nights.
- Really it is. These two gals worked on the island only a few hundred yards from the town. This is how they got there….EVERY DAY!
- We’ve had several mornings when after the daily a.m. rain we’re treated to this sight for breakfast
- Anja arrived from Tonga on s/v “Quickstar”. As she is a Dive Master, she’ll be my buddy for awhile until Sandrine learns to Scuba
- Anja felt right at home as she slung her hammock under the Bimini. We’ll go “hammer head diving” tomorrow with Peter of s/v “Quickstar”
- Sandrine takes a break from her galley duties which she’s terrific at BTW!
06-2011-Kate, Sandrine & Scott
Kate’s last week with us. Sandrine and Scott head from Western to Eastern Fiji……
- A mini carbon “mega yacht” at sunset, Navadra Island. It doesn’t get any more beautiful than this.

- Arriving at Vuda Point after Customs Check in
- The depth is 8 feet and it’s only 40 feet wide
- Vuda Point is well known for “digging in”. As Hurricanes do hit Fiji, they dig a hole in the ground and put monohulls keels underground to prevent them from blowing away!
- Liveaboards in a very unique life style. Living “underground”?
- Here the hole for a monohull keel has been prepared. The travel lift puts them right on the spot
- When we first arrived a thunder storm was preceded by this wonderful rainbow
- Catch the “since date”…..Welcome to the old Pacific
- Kate would do the driving while I played boat boy to moor up the boat “med style” here at Vuda Point
- Kate thought it would look cool if she drove the dinghy, so lessons were given. It did however cost me a broken toe!
- Kate has a series of “jump photos”. Here at Musket Cove about 2 hours from Vuda Point, we got into the “jump” of it
- Well I guess I had to do it too! Gotta keep up with the kids….:)
- Kate was finishing her PADI Open Water diver class. She did great. She was the first diver I’d certified in 12 years!
- A lovely 60 foot monomaran, “Tusitalia” means story teller in Samoan
- Mungo is Scottish, Kate a Brit and Ashley a Yank…. Mungo is the Captain of Tusitalia and Ashley is his mate. The owner is the Captain of a very large sailing schooner
- This used to be known as the “Two Dollar” bar. Now it’s the 40 dollar bar! The party never stops after 6 p.m.
- If you sail here from “overseas”, for ONE dollar you get a lifetime membership. It paid off as Kate got a 50% discount on a ferry ride she took from Denerau Marina to Musket Cove
- Works the tan constantly….It’s her Job away from home!
- s/v Simpatica and another boat with the moon set and the sunrise…..
- We ended up coming in here 4 times for “repairs”, fuel and on one occasion even to just pick up Sandrine!
- Sandrine’s exercise routine is to fly her silks and do aerial ballet. Just watch! Video one day maybe….
- Nuff said!…
- Do not try this at home…..:)
- According to Sandrine, “Aerial Silks” are replacing pole dancing as the “most popular” attraction in “gentleman’s clubs”…..do tell!
- Chillin’ after the morning’ thrillin’…..:)
- Musket Cove
- Sandrine & Kate while coming back for marketing and REPAIRS from Musket Cove
- Much nicer, in front of the restaurant and we DON’T have to get all the Med Mooring gear out
- By both narrow gauge rail and truck, sugar is king in the islands of Fiji
- For both us and this lovely local
- Off to Navadra Island, most north western of the Mamanuca Group. Kate of course, back “in the office”….. NEXT, Navadra Island and the Yasawa Group
05-2011 – Kate & Scott Sail from New Zealand to Fiji…..

- ENL Electronics, Safety at Sea and Burnsco Marine….We spent money like water!
- Sky Tower behind Kate. Much like Seattle’s Space Needle
- Sky Tower dominates the Auckland skyline
- We went for a visit after an incredible Brazilian barbecue restaurant
- Kate lives on her computer if the internet is available!
- Chris and Sandra Biggs hosted us the night before we left Auckland for Fiji
- Kate charming the Customs checkout officer. She’s really good at it too!
- Graham and Lynn leaving for Tonga in our “weather window”, one hour before us
- Dawn was a boat detailer extrodinaire and great new friend. Paul was my “go to guy” for anything needed doing while we were in Gulf Harbour.
- We were all checked out and left 15 minutes in the cold and very BLOWY front that was just passing by. 40 knots outside the bay.
- Kate was all pumped up and ready for anything on the bow of “Beach House”. We had only our staysail up at this time as it was blowing.
- Apologies to the Beatles. Kate worked very hard on her Royal Yachting Association “Day Skipper” course while aboard “Beach House”.
- Note the 37 KNOTS of apparent wind in the lower right hand corner. We hit 18.5 knots of boat speed during this trip. The day in you see here, we rarely went less than 8 knots!
- Never used the spinnaker, but the genoa and staysail saw plenty of days poled out to windward in the big breeze
- 7 days, a bunch of hours. Faster every day, we motored the last 20 miles in the “lee” of Viti Levu arriving at Lautoka, Fiji. More soon!
